Tips to Start Fresh in the New Year

The beginning of a new year often feels like a rebirth of sorts, a chance for a fresh start with the promise of new beginnings. Even if you’re not one for resolutions, you can jump-start the year with a few small tasks that pay big rewards.

Here are some ideas to freshen up your outlook and get the year off to a great start.

Clean House

  • Check your website for outdated content. Refresh or remove it and add something more current in its place.
  • Weed out old brochures from your collateral collection. Make a note of pieces that need to be updated and add them to your project plan for the year.
  • Donate old give-away items. Note pads or magnets with obsolete information won’t get any better sitting in storage. A local charity might appreciate them.
  • Listen to your office phone greetings. It’s easy to set and forget your IVR message, but customers get to hear them every day. Make sure the right message is being delivered.

Get Something Started

  • What are you going to do this year to make it better than last? Build customer relationships with a newsletter, follow-up program or email marketing campaign.
  • How is your product portfolio faring? Maybe it’s time to start working on a fresh product idea to generate new revenue opportunities.
  • Are you having fun yet? Playing together can make teams more productive. A monthly kick-ball game, annual field day or even a quirky company celebration can make your team stronger.

Plan for Success

  • Your marketing plan should already be done – but is it? If not, schedule some time to plan what you will do for the rest of the year (or just the rest of the quarter).
  • Get your team involved in planning. The boss always has the final word, but it pays to tap into the creativity of employees at all levels. You never know where the next great idea will come from.
  • Where do you want to be a year from now? If you have thought that far out, you should. If your goals are still in your head, now is a great time to write them down. Worried you won’t stick to it? Share your goals with someone who will hold you accountable for achieving them.
  • What would three new customers mean for your business? Could you expand? Hire a new employee? Map out how you’ll make it happen so you can enjoy those rewards. As each new deal is signed, take some time to celebrate the win. You earned it!

What are you doing in your business to get the year off to a running start? I’d love to hear your tips and suggestions.
